Sodium Hypochlorite Generator

Working Principle:

A sodium hypochlorite generator utilizes a saline solution (i.e., an aqueous solution of sodium chloride, NaCl) as the feedstock. Through an electrolytic process within an electrolysis cell, the sodium chloride solution undergoes ionization at the anode and cathode, resulting in the generation of chlorine gas (Cl2) at the anode and hydrogen gas (H2) at the cathode. Subsequently, the chlorine gas reacts with water to form hypochlorous acid (HClO), which further reacts with the sodium hydroxide (NaOH, produced by the electrolysis of water) to yield sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) and additional sodium chloride. This process effectively converts the saline solution into a solution of sodium hypochlorite.

Key Reactions:

  • Anode: 2Cl- - 2e → Cl2↑
  • Cathode: 2H2O + 2e → H2↑ + 2OH-
